Unicorn News and Announcements

Pryzm the Dark Unicorn
TDK Media-Active have released a game for the Playstation 2 platform called
"
Pryzm, the Dark Unicorn" I know it's been available in the US for a while, but I've also
recently seen it available in the UK too ! There is also an online comic (featuring
the unicorns) on the webpage too as well as screen shots of the game.

Now to get myself a PS2, at last I have a good excuse 8-)

Unicorns 2003 Wall Calendar
This calendar for 2003, containing images by Susan Seddon Boulet (1941–1997)
presents twelve of Boulet’s finest unicorn images, and is available from
http://store.yahoo.com/pomegranate/f366.html

Obsessed With Unicorns ?
If you want to find out if you are obsessed by unicorns, then read "You Know
You're Obsessed With UNICORNS when..." on
The Mystic Unicorn site.
The site also has many unicorn pictures too.

The Firebringer
This excellent website, full of original unicorn artwork and a previous
'site of merit' award winner has been recently re-designed
and updated, and it is even better than before,
do visit it !

Unicorn Artwork, the Elfwood Gallery

One place I often visit to find original artwork on the Internet is the
Elfwood gallery at
http://elfwood.lysator.liu.se/elfwood.html

It states it is the largest home of amateur Science Fiction & Fantasy art and fiction, and I believe this to be
quite a true statement from what I've seen ! It's a non-profit project created and maintained by
Thomas F Abrahamsson and others, based in Sweden.

There is a lot of wonderful unicorn artwork to be found on there in the "Lothlorien" online art gallery !
Don't set out with the intention of spending a short time going through this site, you wont, in fact, you
could spend weeks ! There is that much artwork there, and some of it of a very high standard
indeed ! There is a search engine there that will help you find things though.
(Please note, some images there may not be suitable for minors !)

In the last editions, I reviewed the pages of some artists I found there,
So, here are pointers to some more artists pages I've enjoyed seeing recently:-

---------

Anna Schunk, has created a very impressive picture indeed called 'black unicorn', which
has impressed me very much. Another excellent picture is called simply 'unicorn'
see ; http://elfwood.lysator.liu.se/loth/s/a/sahranna/unicorn.jpg.html

Another artist who has drawn a nice series of unicorn pictures, (as well as
cenaturs too), is
Diana 'Malystryx' Alfthan. In particular, one called
'
unicorn stallion' is excellently done, it's worth seeing.

Maria Jansson is another artists work I came across recently.
There are two unicorn pictures on her page that are particulary
impressive and show a good understanding of equine form.
See ; http://elfwood.lysator.liu.se/loth/m/a/mariajan/the_black_unicorn.jpg.html
and ;
http://elfwood.lysator.liu.se/loth/m/a/mariajan/unicorn.jpg.html

Sue MacColl has also done some impressive unicorn pictures, especially one
called '
Unicorn family'. There is also a Pegasus picture which is very good too.

Another very impressive and powerful picture was done by
Leslie D. DeFelice
called '
Majestic Unicorn'. Another picture, 'Unicorn power' and the
picture of Pegasus hatching are also very good

Finally an artist who's work I found to be unique and quite stunning is that
of
Carol 'Talfryn Calhoun' Gravley. One picture in particular, 'Fear' really
impressed me with its energy and expression, as did '
A single moment'

I will be mentioning more unicorn artwork from this gallery
site over the next few editions...........

Pages of Special Merit

This is where I review pages worthy of special merit each edition.
These are pages I've visited or revisited that have something
unique and original about them, they may really do show that the
author has put a lot of effort into writing and designing the site
or display artwork or stories of exceptional originality.
It's a personal award really, to recognise hard work,
originality, good design or just dedication to Unicorns.

This editions award goes to ....

PURE ILLUSION FANTASY

This excellent and intelligently written site has been online for a number of years,
despite having to 'move home' a few times. However, the sites author, Sandy Groff
has always kept in touch and informed people, often through a newsletter, that the
site has moved. Not many people show that degree of dedication and respect for
their "audience". This site has many pages dedicated to unicorns. There are pictures,
poetry, historical and factual information and many other things. Each page is well
designed, easy to navigate and written in an mature but warm and friendly way.
Allied to this site is an equally excellent Arabian Horse site too, well,
what more could anyone ask for 8-) Well done Sandy, you deserve this.

New Websites

As usual there are a number of new sites to look at for this edition that have been added to the
Unicorn links page (which was moved to a separate page then split into two some time ago).

Fantasy Horses is a very new site, and I think one to really look out for in the future. As well
pictures and information on Unicorns, it has the same for Pegasus as well as access
to horse and unicorn poster sites, wearable horse art and other things.
Centaurs and other mythical creatures are also promised soon too.

World of Unicorns (found from Carolina's Website) has information on Unicorns,
quotations, pictures and the site authors own pictures and wallpapers too.

Bruce Coville, the author of many books and stories featuring unicorns has a very interesting
website at
www.brucecoville.com including a page for the Unicorn Chronicles series of stories.

Whiterose's Garden is an excellent site, and has a unicorn page with some very
detailed information concerning the legend and lore about unicorns. There is also
a unicorn
picture gallery. This site is full of information about many other things too.

Holy Dragons, Holy Unicorns has some wonderful stories by a Benedictine Monk
by the name of Andrew Marr. Some of the stories are about unicorns, one of
which is called
Korniel and is an especially good story.

One of the best sites I found recently is The Realm of Myth and Fantasy. It is an
excellently designed site with wonderful linking graphics and backgounds. This is
an example of how it should be done ! It has a collection of unicorn songs, poetry,
pictures and many other things too ! There are also sections on other mythical
horses, dragons, and many other items. Well worth visting ! As the site author
says, it is "a place where imagination reigns and reality is not as it seems."

Fantasy is another excellent website. The author of this site, Joyce P Hale, has
also written a book called "Faerys, Dragons and Unicorns " The site also contains
some of Joyce's own wonderful poetry, including one about unicorns too.

Unicorn Paradise is another very well designed site with some orginal pictures
by the author and various unicorn site links as well as other items.
The Unicorn is also a very good page with information about unicorns

Cheerful Madness, by the excellent artist, illustrator and animator Nathalie Jean-Bart
has some delightfully and wickedly humourous cartoon style
Unicorn sketches within it
as well as another interesting character, Sheital the demon horse ! Worth seeing.

The Elven Forest is a site that has an online story by the pages author.

Amalthea LeFei has lots of pictures including the artists own work. Guardhouse has
a page called
Britannica the Unicorn which has a lot of information about the history
of the unicorn. The site called
Horse Crazy also has a page about unicorns.

Kye's Homepage - Unicorns has some information about unicorns within it.
Pegiunicorn 2000's page has pictures of unicorns as well as poems about them.
Cerridwenn's Secret Stones also has a has a section about unicorns, as does
the
The Enchanted Forest where as the author says "you can imagine and
you can see things you never thought exsisted."

A Dream I Dream . . . Nishi's Universe has some information, links and pictures.
Many Moons Humble Home has some pictures and links to other unicorn sites.
Pearled Unicorns Fantasy has a unicorns page with a collection of unicorn pictures.
Unicorn Godess's World is a page that has some information on unicorns.

And if you ever wanted to ask the question 'Do I spend a lot of
time looking for Unicorn sites ?' The answer is YES 8-).
Just don't ask how big my monthly phone bill is, or
if my computer keyboard is worn out yet ! OK <grin>
SO, if you want to tell me about your Unicorn site
yourself and let me see it, then please
email me.

And there are even more from previous editions or on the links page too !

Please note, the Unicorn Links Page has been split into two
sections alphabetically. This is to make it easier to read
and quicker to load as it had become so large !

Unicorn Movies
(updated June 2002)

Recently a number of unicorn movies have either been released
or re-released on DVD disc or VHS cassette or are about to be;

"Legend"

This was recently released on DVD here in the UK in a wide-screen
version. Many of you will have already have seen it or know of it, it's
quite a wonderful film, and is worth seeing.

The long rumoured "ultimate special edition" has been released in the
USA and is available on
Amazon.com, but not (no surprise either *sigh*) in
the UK where the only version available is the single disc version (see above).

For more facts on the movie, there is a great website,
called the
"Legend FAQ"

"The Little Unicorn"

Available on the UK and USA Amazon sites, news of this movie was
first given here back in the
April 2001 edition of this page.
It's an enjoyable and quite magical story, and well worth
seeing if you like unicorns. I got my copy of this on DVD a week
ago, and was pleased to see it was region 0 (playable anywhere).

The movies own webpage is still online at
Peakviewing Transatlantic's Website.
(I would also like to thank "Peakviewing Transatlantic"
again for granting the use of their material on my website).

"Nico the Unicorn"

If you've not seen this one, then please do so!
It's a wonderful story based on the book by the same title,
and is a most enjoyable family film with a gripping climax and a
happy ending. They even gave the names of the horse 'actors' in the
end credits which is too often forgotten, a very nice touch indeed!
I will say no more and spoil it for you, apart from that it was
far better than I ever expected, so go and get a copy 8-)

And finally on movies.............

News of an important future event !

THE LAST
UNICORN
THE MOVIE
(site recently updated)

The "live action" movie of 'The Last Unicorn'

This new movie of Peter Beagle's legendary and wonderful book is presently
being made by Continent Film Ltd and is due for release in the Autumn or
Winter of 2003. From what I read on their
website it promises to be
something that is quite wonderful and true to original story itself.

It has been recently updated, and do check out the astounding CGI
test animation downloads there, they are more than worth it and
and bear great promise for what I think will be a truly magical movie.

Peter Beagle himself had re-written the screenplay, and some of the worlds best
talents are at work creating this movie at present. It is being directed by Julian Doyle
and Michael Pakleppa and produced by Michael Pakleppa and the Executive
Producer, Joe Drier. The films
website at www.the-last-unicorn.net/index.htm is
full of well written, detailed information and news about the making of this movie.
It really does give an insight into the details of what making it really involves !

If you have loved reading the book, or watching the animated movie,
then do visit their website and see the magic that is being woven.

I'd like to thank Continent Film Ltd for contacting me to give permission to link to their site.

On another note entirely..........
I got my "Nico the Unicorn" copy from Amazon in the USA as it does not appear to
be in the UK yet, hence is only viewable on Region 1 compatible DVD players
unless someone knows otherwise (and do
let me know). Also, the "Legend
Ultimate Edition" does not seem to be in the UK yet. There are sadly many
titles concerning unicorns that you cannot get easily or at all in the UK,
even some that are produced over here ! So you UK DVD and VHS
movie distributors and publishers, GET YOUR ACT TOGETHER !
Why do the UK consumers have to put up with being
treated as second class citizens all the time ?
That's my rant for the month over <grin>

Unicorn Rocking Horses

This absolutely wonderful 46" high carved unicorn rocking horse was
sculpted by DJ Liccardi, and can be found on the "Rare Breed"

Miscellaneous topics

You can see a wonderful Pegasus statue in the process of being made!
If you visit the website of the artist and sculptor
Cary J. Van Dansik ,
and take a look at the
Pegasus page, you will get great insight into
the creation of beautiful sculpture of Pegasus, based on a portrait
of Welsh mountain stallion. There is also a
pair of unicorns
there too, as well as the most wonderful equine sculptures
you will probably ever see.

Anyone who likes flying Unicorns and Pegasi, there is a great site
with a lot of beautiful original artwork. Take a look at ;

The Pegasi Nest Banner

This site has been recently updates, and is now even better !

Another site of interest is Pegasus Paradise
This is a very new website, but it's got a wonderfully large picture gallery !

Unicorn Dream

Unicorn Dream has been 'twinned' with this site.

The brilliant artist who's building this site has revised it recently,
Please note that it is still very much under construction.
It is most definitely worth visiting, you won't be disappointed.

More Unicorn Pictures

Geoff's first unicorn picture

This is one of the first unicorn pictures I've done myself.
Its based on a photograph of a horse I took which
I've reworked. Click on the picture for the full size version.
There is an animated version of this I did on the
index page

Stone Unicorns

Another unusual unicorn picture.
These two impressive stone unicorn figures are
on a factory wall in Stafford near my home.
They were erected when the building was
constructed which was sometime around 1937-1938.
Click on the image to see a close-up of one of these.

(These recent digital camera pictures replace the one's shown here previously)

Recently several more people have sent to me some wonderful unicorn
artwork they had created, which with their permission
I am showing on these pages

Self Portrait of Mare Astra

This picture, created using Photoshop, was sent to me by Mare Astra
as a self portrait. She is significant for having one of the first Unicorn
websites I ever found on the Internet, and her site helped to
inspire the creation of this website over three years ago.

This was one of two pictures sent to me by an an artist called Shar.
Again, as I liked it so much, I asked if it could be displayed here.

This wonderful unicorn snow-globe was sent to me by Meneka Acosta
You can visit Meneka's website at
http://homepages.go.com/~meneka/

Content and Originality

Original work is becoming rarer, and certainly should be valued. But too many
websites recently though are copying others ideas and work then claiming
sole right to it themselves ! They also often use annoying Java code that
stops the right mouse button from working. It's not easy to bookmark pages
easily for reviewing on this page when half the browsers functions have
been disabled by unfriendly Java code ! There are better
ways of protecting original images such as watermarks.
